"Magic or Madness" by Justine Larbalestier

If you like stories about magic and adventure, you may like this novel.  The protagonist of "Magic or Madness," Reason Cansino, has just returned from the Australian outback to live with her grandmother, an extremely dangerous woman.  Reason has spent her whole life together with her mother running from her grandmother who has magic powers that could possibly destroy everything that they hold dear.  However, her mother's secrets and her grandmother's secrets are about to impact Reason's life in a way that she never thought possible.

I thought this book was a little bit boring.  The scenes in New York City took way too long to play out and then the finale was too quick.  I had difficulty at the end figuring out what was going on and had to reread the text just to get a grasp of the events.  However, if you like books about magic and adventure, this might be the novel for you.

"Messenger" by Lois Lowry

If you liked :The Giver," which you probably read in middle school, you may like this book. Much like "The Giver," "Messenger" takes place in the future, in a time that seems very different from our world. Messenger, the main character of the story, is an orphan living in a small village. As the novel progresses, Messenger learns he has a very special gift. This gift, which he alone possesses, allows him to complete a very special task for his adopted father.

While I enjoyed the way "The Giver" left the fate of the protagonist unexplored, there was just too much left unanswered in this novel to be thought provoking. Instead, I turned the last page of this book looking for more and frustrated that I didn't find it. The mysteries, which are interesting, are never given the time or depth they need to capture the imagination and then, when the novel ends, seem completely unrelated to the main events of the book. Normally I like Lois Lowry's books. I enjoyed reading "The Giver" and "Gathering Blue" but found this novel to be too shallow to enjoy.

"Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie" by David Lubar

Transitioning from middle school to high school is one of the most difficult tasks of a teenager's life. Scott, the main character of Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, is experiencing this transition and taking the reader along with him. Written partly in a journal style to his little brother who has yet to be born, this novel is an easy and fun read with a lot of humor. At times, it made me laugh out loud. However, the novel is not all fun and games. Like all teenagers, Scott experiences some difficulties and pain while navigating his first year of high school and learns many lessons about himself and his friends along the way. While the book is humorous, it is also a realistic portrayal of what it is like finding your place in a new environment when everyone around you seems to be changing, including yourself. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
